Ever since upgrading to SP2 of Win XP, Windows Messenger has tried to load
every time I start up, and whenever I open Outlook Express. This never
happened when I had SP1. How can I get rid of it?

Open Windows Messenger and use the Tools> Options menu to change the
startup behavior of the program.

In Outlook Express and under that program's Tools> Options menu, uncheck
the box that allows WM to start when you launch OE (setting is on the
General page). Also in Outlook Express, change the View> Layout and disable
the display of "Contacts" in the OE window.

You should be set with Windows Messenger starting only when you launch it.
However, if you continue to be plagued with Windows Messenger auto-loading
or notice significant slowing in OE, you can find some more information
about managing Messenger here:

Thanks Sharon. Shame the defaults are so irritating!
