How to get rid of NetBEUI

We have a Win2k SBS as a PDC. It has NetBEUI installed as
well as NetBios over TCP/IP.

We have a variety of OS,s on our network 98, Me, win2kPro,
XPHome and XP Pro.

If I try to remove NetBEUI form the PDC server NIC the
whole place falls appart. No one can see anyone else. So I
left it. However, there are some consistent problems that
are not critical but are indicative of a system problem.

I figure, because everyone tells me that we dont need
NetBEUI that a good place to start would be to remove it.

If I remove NetBEUI from a win2kpro computer, then that
computer will not be able to list the computers in the
Domain even though it is part of the domain and can find
the PDC computer by IP address and Name using a search.

Is there some simple protocol setup convention that
applies to all windows OS types on a simple, single win2k
server, Active Directory driven, network?

The browse list will do funny things with multiple protocols. Each protocol on the network will maintain a seperate browse list.
These lists do not get combined so if one list is imcomplete, and that is the protocol in use on a client, that client may not see the
entire network.

To get rid of NETBEUI, which is a great idea, you need to remove it from ALL machines. Then make sure that ALL machines
have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled. If you are in a routed environment, you will need a WINS server for all clients and servers
to register with. Lastly, make sure that there are not any firewalls or firewall software that will block netbios traffic.

Thank you,

You don't need Netbeui.
Install WINS on the server, as W9x, ME and NT4 still needs it. Add options
044 and 046 (0x8) to the DHCP-server, Scope options.
Also, you'll need to upgrade that XP-Home to Pro.
How many nics in the server?
Does DNS on the nic(s) point to your server-IP?
The ipconfig/all on the clients should show that everything is pointing to
your server-IP.
Have a look at www.smallbizserver.net to check your setup. Also, the
microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000 newsgroup is very valuable.

I have a home network using linksys dsl router, three W2K pro PCs.
TCP/IP, file and printer sharing and netbeui are enabled.
Originally, the network included a Win98SE pc. Should I disable
netbuei? What does netbuei do? I no long have my networking
reference material.

Hi Mike,

If everything is setup right, you don't need Netbeui. Make sure all
computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts exist on all
computers.

all user accounts exist on all computers.
