How to get rid of counterfeit copy.

I have an illegal copy of windows Xp professional on my laptop after
receiving a virus and losing everything, i lived in spain this time last year
and had my laptop fixed by a friend of a friend after receiving this virus, i
do have the original copy of windows home edition in english that i'd like to
change to but how, can somebody help me.

The only option you have is to perform a clean install using the legitimate
XP Home disk. You cannot upgrade from from XP Pro to XP Home. Boot from the
XP Home disk and you will be able to format the drive as part of the
installation routine.

Before you do the format and clean install you can use the Files and
Settings Transfer wizard to save your user data files and
configuration settings to a network drive or removable backup device.
(CDRW/DVDRW drive etc). Then when you have installed your legitimate
XP Home you can run FASTW again to import the saved data.
