I have desktop links to some apps. which reside on a drive which is not
always mounted.
Now the icons won't display the normal way but I get blank default icons.
Is there a way I can make the proper icons display indefinitely, also with
unmounted app. drive? Can I copy the concerning icons to C: some way?

If the file containing the Icon is copied to C: and then the "Icon" in
the shortcut is "changed" to point to the icon in "that" file, you will
keep the Icon image.

Bob I said:

So it's not possible to copy just the icon? (the file itself contains
classified information)

Right click on any shortcut, select properties - shortcut tab and click
"change icon" and use any image you wish. Windows wants to use a file with
the ".ico" extension. If you have a supporting image editor, you can create
these. There's a plug-in available for Photoshop to do this.

Scope creep? The EXE file contains the clasified info? In that case you
will have to use some "Icon extracting" 3rd party software to get the
icon "picture" out.
