Good evening. Just discovered that our 4-month old subject OEM Operating System does not have Java installed. Downloaded it from Sun Microsystems but cannot get it installed without changing internet connection proxy settings. Reason: we have dial-up and not LAN. Someone told me I might have the wrong download of Java (1.35 MB), as it should be around 9 - 12 MB for the Java JRE.exe. Can someone tell me for sure what is right and how can I get Java technology installed on our computer? Thanks.

Just go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html and download the
full package of J2SE v 1.4.2_03 JRE.

Thanks Guo. I'll give it a try in the morning. I assume you mean by "full package" that this is the 9+GB version.

Here is a work around that worked for me instead of
downloading that hugh file get an aol free membership disk
i found javavm on the disk i used aol 8.0 disk click on
explore disk and under a folder called tech is a javavm
i installed that and the system works great without all
the added junk i found with the download from sun

Greetings --

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft is no longer allowed to provide its own Java
Virtual Machine to Windows users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the broader
capabilities of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, some of which are listed
here: http://www.java-virtual-machine.net/download.html.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to visit Windows
Update to apply a needed security patch.

Thanks anonymous and Bruce for your input also. These are all good suggestions and I'll give one or more a try. Of course, Bruce, if I do try to get the MS Java Virtual Machine I'll be going back to Sun come September when MS drops the JVM and starting all over again, right? Thanks again to all of you!

Hello guys. Tried almost all of them but no go. Bruce , I downloaded from one of the links you mentioned but then found it only updates the Java you already have! Would not install. I'll keep trying. Will next try a.'s full package version but feel the result will be the same. Stil have not heard from my e-mail to Sun Microsystems.

Having to side-scroll is a PITA.

Have you looked at http://java.com/en/index.jsp

This is genuine Sun Java, as opposed to the bastardized version that
Microsoft no longer includes in SP1. The FAQ linked from this page
should answer your questions.
