Hello, I am an engineering student who is taking a break from school to get
some more real world experience. I am becoming very interested in getting
into embedded development, with emphasis on software. However, since I was
an electrical engineering student, my program only included introduction to
programming and data structures as programming courses. I would like to
start something related to embedded systems as a SMALL business venture that
I could explore. This would also allow me to gain experience in the field.

I see the topics on this board, and I am VERY interested, but I am uncertain
as to what I should do in order to get started in the field given that there
is no one hiring in my region for embedded, and I cannot move to get
experience because of another business I already have. Are there any books
or tutorials that would be good for introducing embedded systems? Any tips
for getting started?

Go visit the MS Website and download the eval versions.
You have the CE and the XPe tools there free to try. Lots of good tutorials
on the MS Site as well.
Just Google for Windows XPe and you will find lots of info.

Well, firstly I'd say invest in some hair restorer, because you're
probably going to be spending quite a bit of time pulling yours out.
After that, there's two books about that I've referred to occasionally -
Cseri's beginners book and Liming's Advanced. I'd go for the latter,
especially as Sean's here to answer any questions on it. :)
