hi,

I recently got a new mother board, which takes ddr dimm type memory. it has
3 slots and claims that it can have up to a total of 3gig of memory (i.e. 1
gig per slot).

I just want to install 1 gig in one slot to start with, but all I can find
is kits which r made up of 512x2 or something like that.

can someone recommend a good product/make for this, and some where I can
order from - preferably uk based.

I've put the rest of my specs below - I can provide more detail if necessary

I haven't seen single 1GB DDR's yet. I guess you'll have to wait a while
longer.

One of our suppliers has the 1GB DDR. More than twice as expensive as 2
512MB, so not many takers.

Try Crucial http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp

Actually, Crucial's UK site shows DDR PC2700 at a bit less for a 1GB stick than
for two 512MBs — comparing apples with apples. Since the 1GB stick is ECC
Registered, 512MB ECC Registered should be compared with it. 1GB is priced at
£226.76 including VAT while two 512MBs come to £232.62 including VAT.

Of course, two 512MB sticks of unbuffered non-parity DDR PC2700 are much less:
£122.18 including VAT.

Unfortunately, they don't appear to have 1GB DDR PC3200.

forgive me, but why do you want 1 stick of ram?

understandably you want future upgradability but if your mainboard supports
it, then stick 2x512mb's in there for dual channel operation.

if you must go for a single 1gb stick try www.scan.co.uk or www.dabs.com

also, ECC (error correction control) ram has to be supported by
mainboard/cpu (hence the 940pin AMD 64bit chips. 939pin will require non ECC
ram)

i had a quick look at scan, and the fastest 1gb nonECC ram was pc2700
(DDR333) for £117.49 inc VAT.

www.scan.co.uk -> memory > Memory - DDR section. part number LN5824

ring them for stock check, as their email notification hasnt worked for me
for the last few orders when parts have been outta stock (i have emailed
them about it). other than that i`ve put around £800 through scan and around
15 orders - good company to deal with.

hope that helps

thanx to all or the help.

in answer to your question - the idea would be a possible final ram of 3gb -
ie one stick per slot. this is as detailed in the motherboard manual, though
the discussion here has bought me a bit more info as to what is currently
viable. i also have a small trivial problem that my pc case is a bit cramped
at the moment, so 1 stick would be easier to fit!
