I use Microsoft Word 2003. Sometimes, I need format the page number as
"S1, S2, S3.....". I couldn't insert a page number with this format.
But I get it around by inserting page number first and then put an "S"
before the page number. But the problem appears when I tried to index
the document. The format of the page number in the index is still "1,
2, 3..." How to solve this problem? Thanks!

Yes, INDEX, TOC, PAGEREF fields will only and always reflect what a mere
PAGE field on the given page will display, nothing else.

You can "post-process" the result of the above fields (i.e., unlink the
field results and insert your "S" there).

The only option to instruct Word to display something else than "1" is
to add the chapter number to the page number. You need to have a single
instance of a heading style (Heading 1...9) in your document that is
numbered alphabetically, starting with "S". Then you can format your
page number to include that heading number.

I'm only having a computer with Word 2000 here at the moment, but it
seems that you need to have a divider ("-", ".", etc.) between chapter
and page number, though.

Alternatively, you can use SEQ fields for this kind of numbering.
Create the "S" in a style which should be included in the TOC (for
example a heading style). Then add an \s switch to the TOC to include
the "S" with page numbers.

For example:

"S" number in text:

{ SEQ test \r 19 \* ALPHABETIC } This is a heading 1 paragraph

TOC field:

{ TOC \o "1-3" \s "test" }

Of course, a section break is required before each field where page
numbering should restart.
