You format it as you install it.
During install if you don't have it as NTFS, you can always do that later.

You indicate you want to format for W2000P. I assume that
you want to do your first install of W2000P?

If there is nothing on the drive that you want to save, do
a zero fill first using drive manufacturer's software and
then check the drive for errors with same software. If
there are other items on the drive you wish to save, and
this is an upgrade, I'd start with Fat32 and worry about
an upgrade to NTFS later.

Think out how much space you want to allocate per partion
as you will be asked this when you install W2000P. When
W2000P is installing it will say to effect - you have X
space available for a partion, how much of this do you
want to use for W2000P? You can select all or a part and
then install Winnt in either NTFS or Fat32. Be aware that
some add-on services like IIS will only run on NTFS.
However, if you crash and burn, a drive written in Fat32
can be easily installed in another W2000P computer and
read to salvage data. NTFS isn't so easy because of the
file security. Best to read up on it if this is your
first W2000P install.

Insert 2000 CD in system and boot up.
Follow the on screen instructions.
The cd will format the drive for you, nut you will have to
decide if you want the system formatted in fat 32 or NTFS,
for security issues it's highly recomended that you use
NTFS
