How to for ethernet?

What do I need to set up an ethernet connection from my main computer at
home to a client in my wife's office about 50 feet away? I have tried using
an ethernet cable about 85 feet long as a test before I put in down the wall
and did not get a signal from the ethernet port on my D-Link 614+ wireless
router. If I connect the cable to the port on the cable modem the signal
reaches the other room just fine, so the cable works. Do I need some type of
a booster for the signal from the router? I thought ethernet cables could be
much longer than 85'. I eventually want to get rid of the wireless part of
the system because of interference with a cordless phone system and less
than ideal signals even with a repeater. Thanks

A Cat5 ethernet cable will work for distances up to around 328'. Are you
sure you didn't plug this in to an uplink port? Have you tried another
port?

I plugged the Cat 5 cable into a normal ethernet port that works well with a
shorter cable. The cable checks out ok with a cable tester and it works ok
if plugged into the output from the cable modem. I guess there is just not
enough power coming out of the router ports to go the 85' distance.

Any Ethernet port should be able to send a signal 85'. I think that a
defective cable is more likely than a defective router port.

What kind of booster. Who makes them and what are they called? Thanks.

You might need a booster to run wireless 85', but you should not for
wired ethernet. I suspect that you have a bad cable, even if the
cable tester shows continuity. There are lots of examples of mis-wired
cables that work for short (10-20') distances; for longer runs, you
need to pay attention to proper pairing - just like the cable specs
show.
