how to find what programs are running

When I wake up my computer aftr it has been sleeping it
says I have 1 program running. There shouldn't be anything
running that I am aware of. How can I find out what
program is running?

installed? Even if I havent installed a new program, when
i click start to shut down, the yellow messege box comes
up saying "New Programs Installed". I look on Add/Remove
Pgms, but dont see anything new...any ideas?
