How do I find out if I have USB 1.1 or USB 2 in my
machine ? I have a Compaq 2500 Series Notebook with Win
XP Home Edition. Also, how can I know if I
have "FireWire" port in my Notebook ?

You can look in the device manager.

USB 2,0 is listed as Enhanced USB Port

Firewire or IEEE 1394 will also be listed if you have it.

If your computer was made more than two years ago, you have
USB 1.1

This is a good question for Compaq not Microsoft.

Thanks a lot Jim. I could see the IEEE 1394 port. Also,
in the Device Manager, I could see the following:

USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller

(The last three are by VIA Technologies). I guess I
should be having 3 USB 1.1 ports and 1 USB 2 port. Is
that right ? My Notebook was manufactured in November
2003.

Not sure, I'd bet that all your USB ports are 2.0, how many
ports does your computer have?

You might check Compaq websites for complete specs.

The Via Enhanced Host controller is an overall USB2 contoller AFIK. It
might be more of a patch, but it should enable USB2 on all the ports.
