How to explicitly invoke Auto Update

Hello,
I am working on a Win200Professional machine connected to my office LAN. The
domain administrator recently formatted my machine and did a clean install
of Win200Prof. SP4. After that, using his own login, he explicitly
downloaded all the updates from the Windows Update website and installed
them. My login-id is also a part of the Administrator group and I am allowed
to install softwares on my machine.

Now, some new updates have been released by microsoft, and if I goto the
Windows Update website, I am able to download the updates. But when I
install them it fails. I have tried manually running the patch, from the
C:\WUTemp folder, where it got downloaded, but it fails with a message: "You
donot have permissions to update Windows2000. Please contact your system
administrator." I have contacted the domain administrator and he says that I
have all the permissions to do the installation, as my login-id is a part of
the Administrator group.

Also, I believe that whenever there is a new update available on the net, if
I donot explicitly visit the windows-update website, windows shall
automatically check it and download it and install it through the Auto
Update feature. But even that is not working. The Auto Update icon doesnt
appear in the system tray. The Auto Update is not getting invoked and it is
not searching for available patches. This feature is currently turned on
through the control panel setting and is set to "Automatically download and
install at 1PM everyday".

Now, I have two questions:
1. Why am I not able to install the patch from the website even though I
have administrator rights?
2. Is there any way to manually invoke the Auto Update feature so that it
can download and install the patch?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi Victory,

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...eTC/b23562a8-1a97-45c0-833e-084cd463d037.mspx

1. Check this page. See whether your Automatic Updates client is the SUS
client or the WSUS client.

2. If you go to this page,
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en

and when it checks for an updated version of Windows Update, does it prompt
you anything?

3. And if you continue updating, what does it prompt you?

4. Also check your event viewer to see if there is any related warning or
error.

5. Start IE, click on Tools, Internet Options, click Settings button, View
Objects button. You will end up with the Downloaded Program Files folder.
One might be WUWebControl Class. What is the size, creation date, and
version? What if you delete it and try step 2 again?

Hello,
When I clicked on the first link for the first time, my Automatic Updates
settings tab showed me a SUES client interface.
Then I used the second link, and it updated the Windows Update software on
my machine. I had previously not updated the Windows Update software and I
was still using the "Windows" Update and not the "Microsoft" Update. It also
created two objects in the "C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files" folder.

Then I continued updating, and it identified 3 "High Priority" patches to be
installed. It downloaded all 3 and then successfully installed one of them
while two other patches failed.

Then I deleted two objects from the "C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files"
folder which were newly created. I tried updating again and encountered two
failures again. Corresponding entries for these four failures and one
success were made in the Event Viewer System Log.

Now in the "Downloaded Program Files" folder, the two objects I deleted no
longer appear, hence I cant give you their size and version.
Also, on invoking the Automatic Updates settings tab now, it shows me a WSUS
client interface.

I think the problem is with some kind of access permissions. Because if i
login to this machine using the id and password of domain administrator, the
updates shall be successfully installed.

Hi Victory,

It just seems a little bit strange.

What kind of account did you actually use to perform the update? Make sure
your account is a local account in the local administrators group (if you
don't know how to make sure, ask your admins, they should do the job for
you).

And if you now have upgraded the Automatic Updates to the latest version (ie
WSUS), it should update your Windows if you set it to Automatic
(recommended) option and if you have an internet connection consistently.

(btw, next time pls don't cross post to so many irrelevant groups, I just
recognize this, but I am not sure which group you check the post, so I still
keep them here, pls remove irrelevant groups if anyone reply, this is not
relevant to group policy (eg.) unless you use group policy to force update)

Hi,
Actually this is a strange problem. Even my domain administrator is a bit
amused.

The account that was initially used to do the updates was the account of the
Domain Administrator. It was not the local administrator. Even if i login
using the account of local administrator, it doesnot allow me to do the
updates and gives the same error. Its only through the account of the Domain
Administrator that i am able to do the updates.

Internet is always connected and that is not a problem at all. Also, i am
now on WSUS client and it has been set on Automatic(recommended) option.

Also, the reason why i had included group_policy group here was because
there is a Group Policy implemented over here for these updates. The WSUS
settings page from control panel actually remains in a disabled state and i
m not allowed to make changes to it. However the selected radio is always
visible. The updates are regularly forced by the server but i am also
allowed to visit the windows update website and explicitly run the updates
(which is currently not working as mentioned). But as i had mentioned
earlier, the Automatic updates is also not getting implicitly invoked.

If u feel there is any other irrelevant group i'll gladly remove the same.

Please help resolve this strange problem.

Hi Victory,

There's two things you can try at this moment.

One is you can talk to your admins and see if they are willing to remove
your pc from the domain (they can join it back on later) so as to
temporarily get rid of the domain group policy (there might be other ways to
achieve this, but completely getting rid of it eliminates this factor
completely) which forces you to get updates from your internal SUS/WSUS
server.

You checked the event logs previously. Can you pls post all the details here
including the id, source etc.
