I'm having fun using the Snipping Tool for pictures on my laptop but I can't
erase anything other than 'hightlight' lines, which aren't needed. I've tried
working it like Paint and in raster editing apps but nothing happens. I only
have the touch pad and a laptop mouse. What does 'erase' actually do, and can
I do it?

ERASE deletes the pen or highlighter additions that you make to a
captured image.

The eraser is used in combination with the pen or highlighter tools. To
erase portions of the original snip you need to use Paint or a photo editing
program. You might like the free Paint.net program. http://www.getpaint.net/

I find that if you Save your snip, then open the image in Paint, you can use
the erase function there; also if you Copy the snip and Paste in Paint you
can use the erase function.
