I downloaded a picture to use as a desktop wallpaper. By error I
right-clicked "set as a desktop item". Now it is on my desktop and I can't
figure out how to get rid of it!

Can some kind soul tell me how? Thanks.

Run RegEdit. Drill down to this key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\
NameSpace
You will see several items listed here. Click on each item. Look for what you
want to delete. Delete it. Reboot.

Control Panel -> Display -> Change your picture to NONE (or whatever you'd
like)

Only 5 items are listed under NameSpace. None of them appear to be the
suspect picture.

It was set on None before the incident and still is--but the picture is
still on the desktop.
