You can edit them with the Gimp, but you have to save them as jpg or png
or something and then convert back to gif with another program like
Irfanview.
If you mean animated gifs, Ulead Animated Gif editor or something works
well.

there is a licence problem with gif.
workaround: convert to png (with irfanview e.g.) and then choose whatever
tool you like (photosho_t_, gimp ...).
you cam make animated gifs with openoffice.org.

Why? I save them from The GIMP as gifs all of the time. When you name
them in the program, for saving, use the .gif extension.

But one of IE's many broken parts is that it doesn't consistently
correctly render pngs with alpha channel transparency, so sometimes you
have to use gifs if you want that ability and you're going online with
the product.

This will bring on the MS-worshippers, but so be it. A fact is a fact.

Depends on what you are planning to do. When you want to edit an animated
gif, you can use Ulead GifAnimator 2.0. It can be downloaded from
http://www.pcformat.hu/download/Gif Animator.zip.
When you want to edit a single gif-file you can use IrfanView
(http://www.irfanview.com/).

With kind regards,

I didn't realize it took a plugin if one is using the GIMP in Windows:

"...download the file gimp-gif-1.2.5.zip (from a server in Finland).
Unzip and put the gif.exe in your GIMP plug-ins folder."

But that's better than nothing.

And it looks like it's Windows that makes the GIMP actually gimpy:

"The program(s) might crash unexpectedly or behave otherwise strangely.
(But of course, so do many commercial programs on Windows.)"

No fair, Blinky. You could just have easily have said, "And it looks
like the GIMP developers aren't too good at writing for Windows."

Works transparently, though. Never had any problems with it.

It does the trick.

Don't sound so surprised. };O)

(FTR, I have never had Gimp crash or behave strangely, ever, whether in
Win or Lin.)
