I have downloaded Vista RC-1.
Once I burn the DVD....what are the steps for creating a dual boot situation
on my hard drive?
Directions? Web Sites?

I realize I need to back up everything on XP Pro before doing this.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

If you are going to dual boot using your existing drive on which XP is
installed, you need to create a logical disk partition. You can use your
existing Windows XP disk to create the partition by booting from the disk
and launch into the text based setup:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313348

You need to create a partition that has enough space for Vista, 20 GBs is
recommended.
After the partition is created, go back into Windows XP, insert the Windows
Vista DVD, and setup will start, after downloading any necessary updates,
typing in your product key, you will given a choice to either upgrade or do
a custom install. Choose Custom, and select the partition you created for
Vista, and setup will start copying files to the destination drive.

During the installation, Vista will restart the computer, Vista will
automatically create a new boot manager, boot back into setup and finish the
installation, Setup will restart a few times until you reach the Out of Box
page.

Ok now tell us if we want to get rid of the VISTA installation on partition
2,

how do we do that and return XP to its prior single boot state?

Boot off your XP disc. Choose the option to run the repair console.
At the "DOS" screen you'll be prompted for the XP installation to log
into. Choose it and enter the Admin password.

Enter the command "fixboot" to restore the XP boot files. Might need to
do "fixmbr" as well. Issue the command "exit" to reboot the computer.

Delete the \boot folder and the bootmgr file from the root directory of
the boot drive.

IIRC, that's it.

yeah I know that.. I was hoping for a more elegant solution....

thanks anyway

John Jay:
VistaBootPro 2.1 eliminates the Vista boot with a couple of clicks,
then format partition 2 in your senario.
