Not exactly hardware, but maybe you guys can give me a clue.

I want to have my XP computer handle phone calls, fax and answering
machine altogether. For that I guess I need a piece of software. The
software should be smart enough to know if it's a phone call or a fax.
If it's a fax, start to receive right away. If it's a phone call, have
it ring 3 or 4 times for picking up, otherwise the answering machine
kicks in and records the message. Is there such a goodie out there?

AFAIK you can't tell whether it's a call or a fax until you answer it

I'm pretty sure that there are boxes out there that can determine between a
voice and fax call and route the call to a specific phone, so I think it's
possible to do this. I'm just not sure exactly how.

It would be a function of the modem hardware itself. I'm pretty sure that if
you keep the resistance high, you can "pick-up" the phone and the phone
company won't detect the pick-up so the computer can listed for a fax tone
but the call isn't considered answered yet.
