Any suggestions gratefully received.

By "warm reboot", I would assume you mean without powering down - although,
not sure why you would want that/care...

how do I boot into "safe mode" in "windows xp home"

First hit:

Essentially, do a Shutdown --> Restart and when it starts to post, start
tapping the F8 key once every second. A menu should appear allowing you to
choose to boot insto Safe Mode.

You can also use MSCONFIG...

Start > Shutdown > Restart

As your computer restarts, hold down or start tapping the F8 key.

When the Advanced Options menu appears, use the arrow keys on your
keyboard to highlight Safe Mode.

Press Enter. If prompted, selected Windows XP Home Edition.

Thanks for the replies. However, I wanted to avoid tapping F8 on the
reboot. I'm sure it must be possible.

Then you did not read the replies you thanked people for carefully and/or
comprehend them fully. ;-)

Let me repeat the last part of my reply:

" You can also use MSCONFIG...

I would expand on it - but the web page has a pictorial step-by-step - so I
couldn't do that justice. ;-)

Yes, the msconfig route works. What I had in mind was to have an
icon on the desktop that would enable booting into safe mode rather
than use msconfig route which sets safe mode as the default startup
mode.

Not surprisingly - no one here knew what was on your mind. ;-P

We only see what you show us.

Maybe something like:
http://www.safe-install.com/programs/bootsafe.html

This looks very promising and very close to what I had in mind. I will
try it and report back.

That also looks like a good solution and one which I will now use. Thanks
BTW, if I had explained myself clearly at the outset, we wouldn't have
had such a good dialogue with so many other potentially useful suggestions.

Thanks again.

Use a web search to look for what you want. Here's one hit I found:

"Add "Reboot Into Safe Mode" To Your Start Menu"
http://pcsplace.com/windows-xp/add-reboot-into-safe-mode-to-your-start-menu/

Note: I have not tried the above procedure and do not vouch for it.

If you had said, "Can I put an icon on the desktop that will reboot the
computer in safe mode for me" - you likely would have gotten the same
answers. ;-)

However - less fun, sure. *grin*
