How do I display two spread sheets side by side?
So that I can read from one and edit the other spread sheet, at the same
time?

After you opened the spreadsheets you want to view, Try
Window>Arrange>Vertical

The best way, if you can manage it, is to use multiple monitors. Personally,
I can hardly get along anymore with less than two.
