We had a Win2000 hard disk crash and had to re-load the
OS, apps. and files. Most seems OK, except that the
Desktop files now have multiple associations, e.g. Word
and Internet Explorer. This means that when trying to
open a document, the OS tries to dial an internet
connection. It can be cancelled, but it's a pain!

How can I disassociate the unwanted 'Open with' options
and simply leave the required app.?

Thanks for any help,

Pierson

An example from a command prompt;
assoc .zzz=
would remove all file type association from the extension *.zzz

Dave - many thanks indeed for the reply.

However.... as Internet Explorer is associated with the
files, and therefore doesn't have a'.zzz'-type extension
as per your example, how can I remove this application
association?

Thanks in advance!

Pierson

For what extension? That was merely an example. Substitute your actual
extension for zzz

Thanks - but I know how to Associate, I need to
Disassociate the use of Internet Explorer with files. Any
clues??

Our Word docs, Powerpoint files, excel spreadsheets and
folders are all associated with Internet Explorer. If I
disassociate all .doc's, .ppt's, etc., with everything (as
per your example), will that work? What is a folders
extension??

which files do you wish to dissassociate? you could uninstall ie, if there is no program to associate, windows will ask you to assoc, try that

Everything to the right of the period. Best to uninstall office, restart the
machine then reinstall office.
