How to disable XP password caching in network logon box?

We are in a university computer lab environment, with Windows XP
clients connecting to a Linux/Samba server. If a user connects to the
server via start -> run -> \\servername, they are presented with the
Windows network logon box that asks for username and password. All
well and good. But there is also the little "click here to save
password" check box...we want to disable the ability of a student from
clicking that box, either by dimming it or removing it altogether.
I'll be darned if I can google up the correct registry hack to
accomplish this. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

i believe that disabling the "cryptographic services" service will achieve
this. just go to start, run, and type in "services.msc". double click on the
above-mentioned service, click on stop, then change the startup type to
"disabled". this will do what you want it to, though bare in mind it'll also
disable the storing of passwords in programmes such as outlook, which can be
quite frustrating.

there could, and must be a way to disable it in IE only, but i can't think
of it off the top of my head. if i come across anything i'll let you know.

Q, thanks, but I guess I wasn't clear in my original post. The
password caching I'm trying to disable has nothing to do with Internet
Explorer or websites...what's happening is, I click on start, run,
then \\servername to access a local standalone file server here on
campus. When I do that, I am presented with a network logon box..this
is NOT the Internet Explorer logon box used to access websites and so
on. This is the "connect to" box you use to access servers on your
LAN. It is in this box that there is an option for a user to "save
password", and thats what I'm trying to disable.

You raised something interesting about the crypto services,
though...hadn't thought of that one. I will try that in a few
minutes...maybe that service is what I need to disable.

By the way, I've spent two solid days googling around on this
issue...lots of stuff out there about IE and other browsers caching
passwords, and the password cache issue about Dialup Networking, but I
could find nothing about disabling network logon password caching,
anywhere. Nothing on technet, either. Believe me, I don't post unless
I can't find anything that solves my problem. I'm a google expert
from way back. :)
