How to disable write access for CD/DVD drive?

Hi,
I'm trying to disable the write access for CD/DVD drive but still allow user
to read from the drive. Is there a way to do this in Windows XP?

Appreciate your advice :-)

Open "My Computer", right click on the CD/DVD drive icon and select
"Properties". Click the "Recording" tab and then uncheck "Enable CD
recording on this drive".

You can also completely disable built in XP CD/DVD writing by
disabling the XP IMAPI service. Control Panel -> Administrative Tools
-> Services ->IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service -> Startup Type ->
Disabled.

If you have 3rd party burning software installed you will need to also
uninstall it.

Value Name: NoCDBurning
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Allow CDR
1 = Disable CDR
Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'NoCDBurning'
and edit the value according to the settings above.

Remove CD Burning features

Windows Explorer allows you to create and modify re-writable CDs if you have
a CD writer connected to your PC.

If you enable this setting, all features in the Windows Explorer that allow
you to use your CD writer are removed.

If you disable or do not configure this setting, users are able to use the
Windows Explorer CD burning features.

Note: This setting does not prevent users from using third-party
applications to create or modify CDs using a CD writer.

I presume that by unchecking "Enable CD recording on this drive" - I am only
restricting writing on that particular drive?
Whereas the other option "disabling the XP IMAPI service" completely disable
CD burning for all writable CD drive?

Can I confirm this also apply to DVD writable drive?

Thanks for pointing me to the group policy setting on “Remove CD burning
Featuresâ€.
I was searching for this solution on Microsoft technet but couldn’t find any
info (group policy or Registry setting). Is there a link or document where I
can get such info in future? thanks for your advice.

I’m curious about the other option of disabling IMAPI CD-Burning COM
service. As both are disabling writing to the drive, is there other
differences between the two options?

Yes to both questions. This only affects software that used the IMAPI
service for burning CDs and DVDs and not 3rd party burning software that
install their own drivers for writing the discs.
 
I don't know of a policy to disable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.

MS used to have a pretty good Windows 2000 Group Policy Reference and
Windows 2000 Registry Reference. I think they're phasing them out because
of Vista.

Nero and most other 3rd party software don't use IMAPI for writing to CDs so
this is why my previous reply had this step that you might have missed:

"If you have 3rd party burning software installed you will need to also
uninstall it."

I had the same problem with Nero and another burning program (I forget
which), so while there may be some set of options that work, I finally set
up a user named "CDBurner" and installed the software only for that user.
From there, give only authorized people the password to that account. I
know there are ways around that, but at least it kept casual users at bay.

No, you cannot burn if you don't even have read access to the media,
especially if you want to verify the data that you just burned.
