I had just logged on this morning on my Windows XP media edition 2005 when I
noticed that Anti-virus pre-scan was lasting much longer than usual. I tried
to disable it but the computer is in really slow mode and won't let me
disactivate the program. I tried to lauch my laptop in safe mode to
reinstall latest configuration working but Norton won't allow it.
Any suggestion welcome.

Use Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it. That will
take care of most of it, but you will probably have to get a
supplementary uninstaller from the Symantec web site in order to
finish the job.

Norton supplementary uninstallers:
RNAV2003 for 2003 and earlier
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606?OpenDocument&seg=hm
SYMNRT for 2004 and later.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...6&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&v

Then you can install an alternative product to replace Norton, such as
Kaspersky, Trend Micro, eTrust, Bit Defender, AVG or Avast. The
latter two have free versions.

Good luck
