Hello
I am using Windows XP and I have an external ISDN modem, connected thru
the COM port (RS-232). Windows recognizes it as belonging to category
"MODEMS" and there is nothing wrong with this.
My ACTUAL QUESTION is:
How to prevent Windows XP from detecting that the modem has been
removed when it is physically disconnected. I do not want to disable
hardware autodetection at all. An acceptable solution would be to
disable autodetection in device class MODEMS, but I don't know how to
do it. However, I would prefer to only disable autodetection of
removing this particular modem, if possible. Maybe there is a registry
hack?
Below is WHY I need it.
My problem is related to a non-standard solution I am using. I have two
computers at home and one modem and I am using a home-made switch that
physically connects the modem to one or another computer. It has
nothing to do with an Ethernet switch. It just switches all pins in the
modem's COM port.
When I want to use the internet on one of the computers, I put the
switch in appropriate position and this works. I cannot use the
internet on both computers at the same time, but I accept this
drawback.
The problem is that, after switching the modem to another computer,
Windows on this computer doesn't see it. I must -either- manually
re-run hardware detection using Administrator's account -or- restart
Windows to make the modem work. I guess that Windows detects at
startup, that the modem has been removed.
I would be thankful for any software solution to my problem
