How to disable Finger Service/Other TCP Ports

I have never seen that port on a Windows 2000 Server of mine. The ports that Windows
uses are listed in the KB article in the link below.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832017

To disable a port, disable the service or process using it. If you want to "block" to
block a port use a firewall, ipsec, or tcp/ip filtering. If you want to track down
port usage such as your port 79 run a utility such as TCPView from Sysinternals to
find the process using the port which will show in properties the owning executeable
and path. If you need more info then run Process Explorer and view the properties of
the process that will show the services that are using it. --- Steve

Or to save some time, uninstall the Simple TCP/IP Services.

Finger, echo, chargen, and a bunch of other stuff as well. To be honest,
I haven't installed them since the NT 4 days and had to actually check
to see if they were still available. :-)

A lot of people install them by mistake very frequently. TCP/IP simple
services sounds like a necessary component to some people, even though it's
not.

If s/he's running into this problem, then the original poster should also
consider checking other common configuration errors:
