How to demote a working 2000 DC and reinstall with new domain name?

We built a windows 2000 server SP4 and put in a single
domain name. Now we have all of these Dynamic DNS
problems and we think we should create a multiple domain
name that is our own, like "mydomain.com" and this should
take care of our DNS problems with all of the 2000, and XP
based clients. My question is how or should we demote our
current DC that is in operation. and what are the
ramifications? How do you demote it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mark,

Before we do something drastic, let's take a look at some of the basic tools
available to us.

1) I assume that you can ping the DC in question via IP Address, NetBIOS
name and DNS name?
2) what happens when you run nslookup on that DC? on other machines in the
environment?
3) have you run dcdiag /v and netdiag /v on all of your DCs? Have you tried
netdiag /v on a few clients?
4) have you taken a look at DNSLint?

Do you have any other DCs in your environment?

I am not sure that I follow you when you say that you put in a single domain
name? Do you mean that you put in a single-label DNS name? If so, take a
look at the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300684&Product=win2000

Here are two links for DNSLint:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;321045
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;321046

I hope that this information helps you. Please consider trying these
suggestions and post back what the results were. BTW - if you are not
familiar with dcdiag and netdiag please install the Support Tools on all you
WIN2000 Servers. Both of these utilities are a part of the Support Tools.
There are two places where you can find the Support Tools: on the WIN2000
Server CD in the Support | Tools folder and on the WIN2000 Service Pack CD
in the Support | Tools folder. There are a lot of other great utilities as
well!
