How to defrag "recycle folder"?

My C drive fails to completely defrag. When I look at the problem, it's the
"Applications Data" folder, which has LOTS of fragments: over 6,000. I
don't know how or why, but there it is. More digging revealed that one
folder seems to be the problem:

Volume (C

Cluster size = 4 KB
Used space = 23.21 GB
Free space = 14.02 GB

Excess folder fragments = 0

Percent MFT in use = 77 %
Total MFT fragments = 3

It looks like the troublesome folder is ONE folder which may be old sent
mail from outlook. Yes, I've saved it for "legal" reasons. I don't want it to
keep messing up my C drive, it can go somewhere else, I just don't want to
lose it.

My question is, what do I do about this folder, which will not defrag, and
which appears to be slowing down my system????

Write it to external media instead of risking it on your computer if you
need to 'save it' for whatever reason.

Makes more sense in many ways. You can still have quick access to it, it is
not taking up space on your computer, you get rid of the 'problem' you are
having now and it is more secure/safe from 'accidents' on permanent external
media (you could even have multiple copies in differing formats if so
desired) than the way you have it now.

And - hate to disappoint you - but it is highly unlikely that *this* is
slowing down your system. ;-)

Thanks for your response! Are we sure that I don't need anything in this
folder on my system for any reason?

Defrag might get better results if you close all open applications and
folders, and re-start your computer in Safe Mode, and then defrag while in
Safe Mode, and then re-start normally.

That's a good suggestion -- I'll give it a try. Thanks!

The Recycle Bin is the bin for rubbish. Dump the rubbish.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

DL,
Yes, I've cleaned the recycle bin. I'm just confused/concerned about the
recycle FOLDER, which is very largeand is very fragmented. Since it's in
application "data" and I can't see what's IN it, I'm nervous to just delete
it, that's why I'm here asking -- is the recycle FOLDER as useless and
unnecessary as stuff in the recycle bin?

Gerry, I've done the disk cleanup and all of the steps above including
system restore (removing all but last, etc). This did free up a lot of
space. I've done it several times and have THEN run disk defrag. Every time
the program says the C drive is fragmented and needs help, but after working
and working it says it's unable to defrag and shows this "Recycle folder" as
the worst problem.

Run cCleaner.

cCleaner (freeware) which does a more thorough job than Disk CleanUp.
Disk CleanUp has to be run for each user profile, whereas cCleaner only
needs to be run once.

http://www.ccleaner.com/

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you
should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also
offers backup before removal.

Does CCleaner really offer a backup on items it will delete? If so, I can't
find it.
I know it does for its Registry cleanup feature.

The \Recycler\ folder is just another name for the Recycle bin.
Thus, you never put anything in the Recycle bin that you want to keep.

OK -- I think I'm finally becoming reassured! Even Hopeful!

From what I've read in comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage, defrag is risky and
a complete waste of time.
