Hi, I am new to xp - really used to 98SE. In 98, I had a
start-up disk, so that if I ever had trouble with 98, and
cd would not work, then could put in my 3 1/2 disk, and
get started that way. Is there any such disk for xp? I
have installed the backup/restore program, but am not
able to just create a start-up disk. Is there any way to
do it? Thank you!!

The Windows XP installation CD is also a "startup disk"
and contains the tools necessary to perform repairs.

I went to the web site below, and I am not sure how to
find the files that I am to put on the 3 1/2 disk. I did
a find on them, and couldn't find them anywhere on the C
drive. I am obviously not looking in the right place!
You mention about the xp installation cd having a startup
disk. Does that mean that in cd will create one for me?
Thank you,, Maggie

Maggie, Put a floppy in your A drive, right click, on drop down box
left click format, put a check mark in the box next to Create a MS-DOS
Startup disk. Click start, this will create the disk you want.

Hi, Maggie.
I am obviously not looking in the right place!

You are looking in the right place (C:\), but the files (NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM
and Boot.ini) are all Hidden, System (and probably Read-only) files, so they
don't show up normally. WinXP is trying to protect you from yourself (and
any newbie employees or children you may have).

To see all those files, you need to change a couple of things in Control
Panel | Folder Options. On the View tab's Advanced settings, check Show
hidden files and folders and UNcheck Hide extensions for known file types.
You also may want to check Display the contents of system folders; this will
trigger an "are you sure" screen when you first look at such a folder and
you can tell it Yes.

There are two kinds of startup floppy disks. The one Carey is talking about
will allow you to use a floppy to bypass C:\ and start WinXP from wherever
you have installed it. The one Dan mentions will create a floppy that will
start MS-DOS; this one has nothing to do with WinXP. It will allow you to
access any FAT or FAT32 volumes on your HD, but you won't be able to read
any volumes formatted NTFS.

As Carey says, the WinXP CD-ROM is bootable and is intended to eliminate the
need to have a WinXP startup disk.
