Peter,

This might help:

JSI Tip 5446. How do I direct Internet Explorer 6 address bar searches at specific search engines?:
http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBK/tip5400/rh5446.htm

Example:
I have set it as:

G <keyword> - Google with the search keyword
D <keyword> - Dictionary.com with the search keyword
Q <nnnnnn> - MS-KB Id, given it number <nnnnnn>

Note: Tweak UI for Windows XP also provides the above feature.

Another option is to create new App Paths manually (to launch a website by typing a letter in Start/Run dialog):

How can I enter just "google" in the address field of ie6 and have it go to
www.google.com?
Or enter "hm" and have it go to hotmail.com?

Put the appropriate URLs in Favorites (e.g. go there and press Ctrl-d)
and rename them to those names. Also provided you use
AutoComplete for Web Addresses you then may not even have
to type the whole strings.

In addition to Ramesh tips if you have installed the IE5 Web Accessory
Quick Search.exe (usually found in the Links folder) you can use it to
create custom address bar shortcuts which accept parameters.
