how to create password protected files

everyone keeps telling me this is a simple procedure, yet
they can't explain how to do it. how do i create a
password protected file (either a word doc or just in
creating a new file)....how do i keep it secure to myself?

In Word, in the dialog box in which you save the file, look for an
options tab under which you can specify a password. In Word or other
application, search help for "password" to find out how to it in the
application you are using.
