Dear Windowers,

how can I create more partitions in win2000? I am about make a clean install
on my laptop and want to have 2 partitions. One for all the usual files, and
one for backup. For example drive C and D.
Windows standard uses all space for one partition. How and where can I make
2? Will Windows give me the oportunity during installation; or do I have to
do this before or after installation?

You will be given the option of deleting and creating new partitions
when you run Windows 2000 setup. To avoid drive letter assignment
surprises you should exit the setup program after you delete and create
the new partitions then start again and format and install Windows on
the first partition. If you do not exit after creating the partitions
Windows may end up on drive "D" instead of "C". Also, you might have a
service partition that you might want to preserve on the drive, you
should check that out and not delete the service partition if you want
to keep it.

Dear John John,

thank you for your reply.

What is a service partition and how can I find out if I have one?

A Service Partition is a usually hidden non-DOS partition that contains
a factory image of the computer configuration and operating system.
When you boot the laptop you might see information instructing you to
press a certain key, (like one of the Function keys), to launch the
restore program, the laptop operating system and hard drive is then
returned to factory-like conditions. The partition may also contain
backup copies of other manufacturer installed software and utilities.
With partitioning software you should be able to see if such a partition
exists on your laptop, or consult your user manual for additional
information. I always recommend against removing such partitions but
some people deem the partition unnecessary and remove it, it's up to you
to decide if you want to keep the partition, if you have one at all to
remove or keep.

For example, see IBM typical information on such partitions:

Dear John,

thank you for your reply.

I believe I don't have one, as I don't see such screen. Only to push a
button for the bios.
I also have a restore cd, instead to push a button for a special menu to do
such thing. So I am going to take my chances.

THX 4ur help.
