I don't understand how to create my own design template. The most important point for me is to create placeholder for a picture and to assign to it the necessary animation. I would like to apply this design on the master slide and when I create new slides only to change link to the picture.

Unfortunately you're not going to be able to do what you want via the
template. However, you can create a sample slide that works the way you
want and then duplicate it and change the picture. However, you can't do it
exactly that way either, because when you change the image you actually have
to insert a new image and it is inserted without animation settings.

However, if you place an autoshape (rectangle) on the slide and give it a
fill effect and click on the Picture tab and specify your image, you can
then make the animation settings. Make the rectangle the size of the
pictures, with the same aspect ratio so that the picture isn't distorted.
Duplicate the slide, select the rectangle and modify the assigned picture,
selecting a different one, the animation settings will be undisturbed.

Hello,

It is not possible to create you own custom placeholders on the Slide
Master that are specific to "pictures" (or to create your own "autolayouts"
which would understand such a custom placeholder). However, you can
certainly assign a default animation effect on the Slide Master to the
"Object Area for AutoLayouts" and that animation effect will be used for
object area placeholders for the various slide layouts available from the
task pane so that if you use one of the "content" layouts ("Title and
content", "Title and 2 Content", etc.) and use the "Insert Picture" icon in
the placeholder for your slide layout to insert your picture, the picture
will take on the custom animation setting from the slide master.

If you are using PowerPoint 2002 or PowerPoint 2003 you can take advantage
of the Multiple Master feature to create two separate slide masters (one
without animation applied to the "Object Area for AutoLayouts" and one WITH
animation applied to the "Object Area for AutoLayouts"). While in Slide
Master view you can give them distinctive names so that it's easy to choose
between them using the Slide Design task pane (since they will look
identical). Then, when you want to create a slide where the picture you
insert takes on the animation automatically you can:

1) Insert -> New Slide (choose the "content" layout that is most
appropriate for the type of slide you want to create
2) Format -> Slide Design (choose the design "Used in this presentation"
portion of Task Pane which has the custom animation effect) -> Apply to
Selected Slides
3) Click on the "Insert Picture" icon in the center of the content
placeholder for the slide and insert your picture

When you want to create a slide which doesn't use the animation effect,
simply use the Slide Design task pane to change the design for your current
slide to the identical looking design which doesn't have custom animation.

Now, if you want to change the animation effect for every picture in your
presentation which has been inserted in this fashion, you just have to edit
the animation effect on the slide master for design which contains the
animation effect and change the animation effect applied to the "Object
Area for AutoLayouts".

Hello,

Of course (and as usual :-)), If you (or anyone else reading this message)
feel strongly that some kind feature for creating custom placeholders
and/or slide layouts should be a built-in feature in PowerPoint, don't
forget to send your feedback to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also why it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible. Each submission should be
a single suggestion (not a list of suggestions).

Great tip, John. I didn't realize that the placeholder could be animated
and that any layout would pick it up. That offers some very cool
possibilities.

Hi,

Another good thing to know is that in 2002/3, you can take the animation
from the Master and apply it directly to that slide (right click in
Animation Task bar on Master animation that appears). Then it can be further
customised. A good way to get a whole presentation animated slide by slide,
but allows later tweaking.

Very cool. I was trying to do something similar for someone at PPTLive,
but it never occurred to me that the various content would pick up the
"text" animation settings (object area for autolayouts).

One thing to note -- you have to have "automatic layout for inserted
objects" turned on in Tools/Autocorrect for this to work. Otherwise,
when you insert an image, it will insert "normally," i.e., not in the
content placeholder.
