How to create a custom hit counter?

How do I create, name and upload gifs for the custom hit counter? Frontpage
makes it sound like all I need is one gif file??? Don't I need one gif for
each numeral? Is this really going to do what I want it to do - i.e. give me
a hit counter with gifs I create myself?

Here's a utility at for just this purpose:

Creates the image, all you have to do is save it as a gif, then in FP
specify the gif file you want as your counter digits, publish the page with
the counter, and the gif file, very easy.
