How to count no. of months in a column of dates that are mmddyy

Using Excel 2000. I want a count of the number of each of various months that
appear in a column that is formatted mmddyy and total the associated expenses
that are in the next column. Using COUNTIF I haven't been able to express it
properly to obtain the correct amount.
 
suggest you post to an Excel newsgroup. this group is for MS Access database
software.
