I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP2) and Plextor
PX712A installed. From some purchased retail CDs that I have, I would like
to copy specific songs from each one to my primary hard drive and then play
them with windows media player and also burn these specific songs to a CD.
I am a newbie at this and don't understand all of the terminology such as
ripping, etc.. Can I just copy the desired files (drag and drop) from the
CD to the primary hard drive when it is in the CD-ROM, and then do what I
would like to do?

Would very much appreciate any help with my questions. I used Google in
trying to find some applicable information but did not have much luck.
Thanks, Sam.

Go to view in WMP,go to,select rip.A new window opens in WMP asking
to install a cd,once installed, the cd will be listed with contents, uncheck
the
tracks not to copy.

You can't copy a music CD directly since the files are just pointers to the
actual music. You must rip as indicated in previous reply.

Many thanks for your replies. I just opened the Windows Media Player
(version 9), clicked on the "View" and "Go To" commands but did not see the
command "Rip" (did see the command "Copy from CD"). I am missing something
here in not seeing what I should see or not having WMP setup properly, so
would appreciate further help. Thanks, Sam.

You can also use MusicMatch (I believe the basic version is free), I
personally find that better for rip/burn than WMP.

You can also update to WMP ver. 10 which has a RIP and BURN function built
in. Alternative choices abound but this is my favorite for it's ease of use
and intuitive options:

First install version 10. It will allow ripping to MP3. In either case "Rip"
should be available on a tab or the go to. If not, something is definitely
wrong.

Many thanks for your replies. As soon as I can find where to download WMP
10 from, I will install it on my computer tomorrow. Strange that my WMP 9
does not have the "Rip" feature on it unless I am just not seeing it. Will
look at WMP 9 again tonight to make sure. Thanks again, Sam.

There are many ways to do it; however, if you need audiophile quality copies
on your hard-drive, the free WMP10 with Audio (mathematically) Lossless
codec is your best bet for ripping - at this price. The downside is the
rather huge size of the lossless files - about 25 MB per 4min track.
For burning, though, try to use some dedicated burning software - Nero,
Roxio or your burner's own tools.
