look on the website of the manufacturer of your hard drive - they provide
utilites to set up their hard drives including partitioning, formatting and
file copying.

Try Acronis True Image. It costs money but you can use it free for 15 days
and download it from the net.

Are you using windows?

It sounds like you have a bad HDD and are trying to recover files off a lost
HDD. Otherwise, why don't you use both HDD's at the same time in the comp?
Then you can just drag and drop all the contents from the old one to the new
one.

There are also devices out there that will allow you to convert your old
drive into an external drive.

Although you did not say, I will assume you cannot use a CD or DVD writer.

Again, getting a free program is still going require that you have your
first HDD in working order. Does yours work?

Do you want to make the new drive a bootable drive? If you do, then you
need to clone your original drive. Acronis True Image will do that for you.
Western Digital has a CD that comes with their hard drives called Data
Lifeguard that will also copy one drive to another and make the new drive
bootable. I think it works on other maker's drives but I'm not sure about
that.

DataLifeGuard is available on the WD website. Other HD makers have
similar utilities. If they don't then you need to switch to one that
does.
