How to copy an Outlook distribution list for some changes?

I want to copy a long distribution list and make a new one with a few
changes, while keeping the original intact. I can't see any way to do it
without creating the list from scratch, which is a lot of selects.

There is no way to save a DL under a different name in the same folder, so
the easiest way to save a copy of a DL is to use the "Copy to Folder"
command in the File menu and save it in another folder. Then you can edit
it, rename it and move it back to the originating folder if you want.

Thanks for the confirmation that I couldn't do it readily. But I don't
understand your instructions. What file menu are you referring to? I
thought the address book with the DL selected, but there is no file menu
choice like that. That was the only obvious one to use. Maybe I should say I
am using Outlook 2000 SR-1. Is that a factor in your advice? My company is
planning to get more current, but this is what I have to work with for the
moment. I appreciate your prompt reply.

Kevin's answer is spot on.

I'm getting somewhere with these suggestions, but not all the way. I also
should say I have Word as my email editor .

So I copied the original DL to a folder as you recommended, which was saved
as an RTF file, but this was into a Windows folder, not a mail folder. I
removed the entries using Word and changed the internal DL name and did a
Save As to create a shortened DL with the new DL name.

Now what? I see no mechanism to copy this back into the mail system. You
say I can move it back to the original folder, but that is the contact list,
not a Windows folder. I can't open an existing DL in Outlook and import or
move there "from" an external folder.

I don't know if or where a Contacts folder exists. I haven't found one or a
reference to such an entity. So I need one (?) more hint as to how to get the
edited file back into the Outlook Contact framework.

Not at all what we recommended.
You should be copying it to another Contact Folder so the DL will remain
intact as an Outlook Item.
You must have at least one Contacts Folder. Where else could this DL reside
if not in a Contacts Folder?
