How to convert wmv to avi etc

Does anyone know of freeware that will convert Microsoft's proprietary
media format .wmv (windows media video) to open standards such as .avi
or mpeg? I understand that virtual dub used to do this (as of v1.3 I
think) but that they were "prevailed" upon to remove this feature in
later versions. Any help appreciated.

1.3c is still about
 
Unfortunately it doesn't work -- it won't open .wmv clips. guess i'm
stuck :-(

Strange; I just tried to put a couple of .wmv's through it and it
crashed both times. Perhaps I will look for an earlier build sometime
to see what the problem is.
In the meantime, go back to the site and get asftools; that should do
the job.
 
Any ideas where it can be downloaded from. The archive on virtualdub
didn't have it. TIA

Isn't Virtualdub hosted on sourceforge? If so, you can checkout the
sources via CVS - just as an idea
