I have a 4-year old Dell desktop computer with USB ports.
This USB ports seem to be v. 1.0 but compatible with v. 2.0.
My question is how to convert version 1 to 2.
TIA. Craig

You can't. Simplest and cheapest solution is to purchase a PCI USB 2.0
card.

Thanks.

I did not know that we can add any cards to Dell computer.

Let me ask you a related question. If I add a PCI USB 2.0 card, that means
that the card will provide a separate v.2 USB port(s).
Is that correct? Craig

Open the case and check to see if you have a free PCI slot.

Yep. I installed one on an old HP and it now has 4 USB 2.0 ports. You
can pick one up at any good computer store for less than $15.

When googled, there are too many kinds of PCI USB 2.0 cards. Could you or
others recommend a reliable card (s). TIA. Craig

Somebody mentioned that I should go for a combo usb2 and firewire pci card.
I am not familiar with the combo stuff. What do you think.
Craig

If you don't already have a firewire port and you think you might use
digital video or add an external hard drive sometime in the future whilst
you are still using your current PC, it's a very good idea.

Thanks for your comment. Meanwhile, I searched for combos.
I am considering to buy Zonet Firewire/USB2.0 PCI Combo Card Model ZUC2400.
or one of those siig from http://www.mwave.com.
In the mwave site, there are too many cards which confused me. I would
like to have your recommendation if you have any particular card in our
mind. Regards, Craig

Hi, Cari and others,

Upon recommendation from this newsgroup, I purchased a Zonet USB2.0 +
FireWire PCI Combocard and installed on my desktop computer.
Its driver was also installed. Now, I am getting the following error every
time I boot my Dell computer:

Play and Plug Configuration error. Strike F1 Key to Continue, F2
to run set up utility.

When I hit F1 key, the Windows screen comes up. Windows is working
normally. It appears that the new USB2.0 ports work but not fast. I felt
that because of the PnP configuration error, the new USB ports are still
under USB1.1. I am wondering how I can fix this problem. I am wondering
this problem has to do with Dell computer or not. Please advise me. My
computer is Dell 4550 Desktop with : Wimp-SPA OS..

Thank you. Craig

Which version of XP are you using. You need to have at least XP SP1a for USB 2.0 support. To find out, right click My Computer and select properties.

If you have the right version of XP, it may be that the USB2 must be enabled in the BIOS settings. This is the settings that the "F2
to run the set up utility" message refers to.
