For PapaJohn:
Your newsletter #19 is the BEST help I've found on this topic, but I have
one problem: I'm using a SONY DCR-DVD92 and recording on 8mm DVD's. I'm
recording using LP (so 60 minutes on a 1.4GB disk). I can convert the .vob to
..mpg using TMPGEnc and view my movies on MediaPlayer...but NOT the entire
movie. The DVD contains 2 .vob files (vts_01_1.vob and vts_01_2.vob). The
first file is 45 minutes; the second is 15 minutes. TMPGEnc allows me to
convert the 01_1 file BUT NOT the 01_2 file. So I loose the last 15 minutes
of my movie :(

Why does this happen? Can you help me? I've tried all versions of TMPGEnc
(2.5 Plus, Editor, Xpress), but they all cut off the last 15 minutes.

Any help you can give me would be very appreciated! Thank you!!

Interesting.... does the vts_01_2.vob file play OK in Windows Media
Player?....

If so, take a look at the file properties to see how they differ from the
first vob... or is one just corrupt from your copying it to your hard drive?

My newsletter #53 is newer, and an update on the subject... it and
newsletter #19 have links on the Importing Source Files > Video > Discs page
of my site... maybe the newer one has something more to help you.

You can use DVD Shrink to backup the DVD to
your hard drive, with the option to create
a single VOB file, instead of the default,
which is to split the VOB into 1GB files.

I did try to use DVD Shrink to backup to my hard drive, but the program says
"DVD Shrink encountererd an error and cannot continue. Out of memory. The
parameter is incorrect." Does this mean that one of my .vob files is corrupt?
The "quality settings" tab in my DVD Shrink doesn't work. Could that have
something to do with it?

When I play both the vts_01_1.vob and vts_01_2.vob in MoviePlayer, they play
fine.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks!

I've never encountered that error. I have no idea what would
cause that. Are you using the latest version of the program?

Never mind...problems solved. I was making a full-disk backup, but should
have been re-authoring instead.

And I figured out my original problem too: By using DVD Shrink, I compressed
the two .vob files into one .vob file. The solution was to use a custom
compression (I used 75%) instead of the default automatic (100%) setting. By
compressing at 75%, I was able to combine the two .vob files into one.
Because my movie is bigger than 1GB, I have two .vob files, but only the
first one is recognized by TMPGEnc. Once I compressed the two .vob files into
one file, I used the MPEG Tools in TMPGEnc to convert the .vob to .mpg. Now I
get the entire 60 minute movie converted :)

Thanks for all your help.

You didn't have to Re-author the DVD. You could have
performed a Full Disc backup (lossless, best quality),
and still created a single VOB file.

In DVD Shrink, go to: Edit -> Preferences... -> Output Files

Then uncheck the box: Split VOB files into 1GB chunks

Something that sometimes works, is just to change the extension from .vob to
..mpg. That is a very quick way to "convert" .vob to .mpg.

The video in a .vob file is mpeg-2 video, exactly the same as in an mpeg-2
..mpg. The difference is that the .vob file also contains some other info for
the DVD. But the video might just play fine when renamed as .mpg.

In fact, I've converted DVDs (non-encrypted ones, of course) to WMV before
that way. Change the extension on the .vobs to .mpg, then import the .mpgs
into WMM, and save to WMV.

Based on my experience, renaming from .VOB to .MPG only seems
to work if the VOB contains just a single audio stream. If
it has multiple audio streams (different formats, languages),
then renaming the file doesn't work.
