Hi,

I'm using Word2003 and clicked on Format/background/fill effects and
put a preset rainbow on the page as a background, but it's way too
vibrant.. is there a way to control the intensity of the fill??

Also when it printed it didn't give the even gradients that appear on
the monitor, is there a way to control that also?

thanks,
niteowl

If you double-click the image, it should open the Picture Toolbar (if it
doesn't, use View, Toolbars and select Picture). There are tools for
adjusting the Brightness and Contrast which should let you fade your
picture.

However, a far better solution is to insert the background as a Watermark.
Select Insert, Background, Printed Watermark - which opens the Printed
Watermark dialog - and then check the Picture Watermark button, you can
insert your background picture and check the 'Washout' button to get the
desired effect.

Terry,

all good ideas if I was INSERTING an image for a background, but I'm
talking about using the Format/Background/Fill Effects" to create a
rainbow background and wanting to control the intensity of the image
that is created on the page.

Here are the steps I'm taking:

Blank page, I click on "Format/Background/Fill Effects" and then on
the window that comes up, it opens on the "Gradient" tab, The top
section is labeled "Colors", and I choose "Preset", then drop the
preset menu and choose "Rainbow".

The next section of that window is "Transparency" which is greyed out,
though I think this is where I should be able to control the
intensity, so HOW do I get that to work??????

The next section is split in half - the left half is labeled "Shading
Styles" and the right half is labeled "Variants".. on the left I
choose "Diaganol Down" and on the right I choose the upper left option
(there are 4 options) and click OK

The resulting page background is way too intense, so how do I control
THAT?

Thanks,
niteowl

If you are using Format | Background | Fill Effects, then you are creating a
background for a Web page? If so, then, as you have seen, you don't have a
lot of choice.

If this is for a printed document, then you need to be using Format |
Background | Printed Watermark. This option, however, provides only Text and
Picture choices, so you would have to have created your fill effect as a
graphic, to which the "Washout" formatting is applied by default in this
dialog.

The alternative is to create the watermark manually, using a filled
AutoShape. When you fill the AutoShape you will find that all the settings
(including transparency) are available. For more on creating watermarks
manually, see "HOW TO: Create a Watermark in Word 97 and in Microsoft Word
2000" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211324

Thanks Suzanne,

I am creating this for a printed document.. but I like that rainbow
effect, though from your description, I won't be able to do this just
with Word..

Thanks for the info,

niteowl

Yes, you *can* do it with Word, but Format | Background is only for Web
pages; it won't print. If you add it as a watermark (manually), you can
format it as you like, and it will print.

but how do I create the rainbow image using the watermark feature, it
only works if I have already have an image to use, correct??

niteowl

Did you *read* my first reply? You have to create the watermark manually
(following the directions in "HOW TO: Create a Watermark in Word 97 and in
Microsoft
Word 2000" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211324). This means that
you will anchor an AutoShape to the header, and you can create the rainbow
effect in your AutoShape.
