Are you trying to joing your 2000 machine to an NT domain? If so, you may
need to either install WINS on your network or setup the LMHOSTS file on
your 2000 machine.

W2K doesn't need WINS. W9x, ME and NT4 do need WINS. Also a lmhosts-file is
not needed to join a W2K to a NT4-domain.

Rossi, how are you joining the W2K to the domain?

Marina

It may be necessary to use WINS if the 2000 client is on a differnt
subnet from the NT PDC.

According MS KB article 258832:

Cannot Join Windows 2000 Client to a Windows NT Domain

This problem can also occur if WINS is not enabled on the Windows 2000-
based computer that you want to join the domain, and the Windows 2000-
based computer is located in different TCP/IP subnet than the Windows NT
4.0 PDC. See the "More Information" section for details.
