How to configure remote desktop connection

I'm confused on how to configure my remote desktop connection for connecting to another computer across the internet. It is not behind a firewall right now. The machine's name is Main with an ip address of 192.168.8.17. When I go to what's my ip, it says it is 24.217.116.160:63644 and my host is cc2-24.217.116.160.charter-stl.com. The confusing part is how to get to the machine (main) from the outside and what to put on the line for "computer" when configuring the remote desktop manager. When I'm on the wireless network within the same workgroup, I can just use the 192.168.8.17. Please help on what to place on the line for computer name etc. Thank you in advance.

Well it seems your behind a router since your local PC has a 192.168 IP. You need to forward TCP
Port 3389 to that IP and call from a remote site using the 24.217 IP address. Is this a cable or a
DSL broadband ISP? Its possible that the modem, particularly if your on DSL, is acting as a
router/NAT. In that case you may or may not be able to setup port forwarding without help from your
ISP.

I have been watching this newsgroup for information such as you supplied here. However, I am still a little confused. When you say "you need to forward TCP Port 3389 to that IP........." Which IP is "that" IP? Are you referring to the machine's IP such as 198.162......... or to the IP of the service such as 24.217..... or ......???

Also, when you say "call from a remote site using the 24.217 IP address", do you mean to say that is the name that is to be entered into the computer name field when a connection is attempted over the Internet? At first I assumed you are saying to enter the 24.217... into the browser address box......... but I am not sure.........

I have been trying to set this up for a while myself. I have a laptop that I want to use to connect to my desktop while I am on the road. I have a cable broadband connection and a Linksys router that connects several other computers in the house.

One more question. Is it absolutely necessary to install Remote Desktop on the laptop even if I only intend to use it as a client and not a host? I can never envision a situation where I will want to access my laptop from a remote location. It is like my right arm...... it goes everywhere I go. I did not install Remote Desktop on the laptop yet, but it is installed on the desktop machine.

Thanks for your help!

You forward ports to the internal or private address (in your case,
the 192.168.x.x) number...

When connecting from over the internet, you need to supply either an
IP Address (the 24.217... one) or a resolvable computer name (i.e.,
www.microsoft.com, www.google.com, etc).

It is clearer now! Thanks. I am going to try the port forwarding trick to see how it acts now.............

Thanks Again!

I have forwarded port 3389 to 192.168.... and am trying to connect with my laptop by typing in http://192.168....../tsweb. I get the signon screen and have typed in 192.168....., 12.214......, the name of my computer that I am trying to connect to, and still can't get connected with any combination.

What should I type in the fields that are available when the Remote Desktop Connection screen comes up? Should I check the box "Send Logon Information...." and type in my name (it is shown as an automatic authorized user in the host Remote Desktop configuration box found in System/Device Manager/Remote.

I feel like I am so close, but no cigar!!

Leave the server name blank.. Only specify a machine name or IP in
the web client if you want to connect to a different machine than the
one that served the web client.

Thanks Jeff!

I posted another note earlier saying now I can't even get to the connection screen. I did all of my experimentation inside the house and tried to get to the connect screen from the airport but couldn't. I tried all of the methods I used while at home but none of them worked. I did not use the Intranet service while at home, I used the Internet connection method. Confirmation of the Internet connection was displayed in the lower right hand part of the IE screen.

I am back to square one now! :-(
