how to compress pictures in word 2000

Can anyone tell me how to compress lots of pictures using Word 2000. I have
looked in Format > Picture but there is nothing there
 
You need to compress them in an image program, such as Ifranview.

Compress pictures was, I believe, introduced after Word 2000.
