How to code the 23'rd' or 5'th' so it renders better

Can anyone tell me how to code date abbreviations like the 23'rd' or 5'th'
where the abbreviation is presented as it is in MS Word? Such as the 'rd'
will be slightly above and a tad smaller than using typical letters. I know
pasting Word code can be a disaster for other browsers, so I would like to do
it correctly via HTML if possible. Seems like there should be a symbol for
it, IMO
