We are about to close a small branch office. We are connected by a VPN.
It has an NT4 trusted domain (we are win2003 AD) and is a remote site
(they are ex5.5) in our exchange organization (email to the users goes
through our exchange2000 org). This office will remain open as an
independent company. We will no longer be affiliated. Can anyone help
me to understand what things I will need to do to:

(1)remove the office/domain ( and users ) from our AD domain
(2)remove the exchange site ( and email accounts) from our org
(3)Set them up as an independent office with domain and exchange org?
(they are still exchange 5.5)

Is there a documented way to do this?
Thanks in advance!

Somebody correct me here ... If this is a trust relationship rather than a
child domain, all you should need to do is break the trust and the
connection. Exchange 5.5 is not dependent on your AD domain, and users in
the NT4 domain shouldn''t have any logon issues if the trust is broken. If
you have assigned cross permissions, they will appear as unattached SIDs in
any ACLs, and can be removed (leaving them clutters things up, but doesn't
hurt anything). You'll have to tweak exchange depending on how you are set
up.

For Exchange 5.5 to participate in the Exchange2000 "Site" you would have to
be using the Active Directory Connector for Exchange5.5 which makes Exchange
5.5 stay in "sync" with Active Directory,...normally on its own it does not
do this.

Remove 5.5 from the "Exchange Site". Investigate the process for any
"gotcha's" on MS site. If you can't find anything then call MS,...do it
right the first time,..you can't afford to screw it up. It is worth the
$250 for the call to do it right.

Once Exchange is properly "divorced", then you simply delete the Trust.
There should not be any accounts in each other's Domain,...the accounts stay
in their own respective Domain,...that is what a Trust is all about.

Thanks for the input! I'll snoop the MS KB sites for removing ex5.5
sites from an EX2k Org...
