How to clean waste tank/pad on Canon S820 printer

While I figured that due to a price under $100 I'd be much better off in
just picking up a new S820 instead of messing with trying to fix the clogged
printhead on my first one, now that I have 2 machines, I thought that I'd
take a shot at cleaning out the other one. By a Google search, I saw
reference to cleaning the pad and waste tank in the printhead. In examining
the printhead after taking it out of the clogged unit, I'm unable to see
just where this is. I presume that it is somewhere inside the actual
printhead piece but would certainly appreciate it if someone could point me
in the right direction.

Much thanks for any help!

If you open the cover, the printhead mechanism will move to the center. On
the righthand side there is a small black square. That's the pad. Unless it
is overflowing or has a lot of dried solids, there would be no need to clean
it. Since you say the first s820 is already toast, you may as well try
reclaiming the printhead. I know others will dispute what I'm suggesting,
but you can take the printhead and simply rinse it out with running water.
Windex can also be tried as a way of removing clogs, followed with a rinsing
in clear water. Be sure to dry all the electrical contacts thoroughly before
trying to use the printer. I've done this on a BJC-3000 which I had already
purchased a new printhead for. The rinsing worked fine and the new printhead
is still in the box. I've also tried it on my s820 when I thought I had a
clog due to an erroneous reading from the printhead test. I figured that if
the s820 was damaged by rinsing then I'd have an excuse to get an i950. No
such luck. The s820 is still going strong. One other thing to consider is
the original warranty on the s820. If there is any time remaining, you might
get Canon to cough up a new printhead.

Ron:
Thanks much for the info about cleaning the pad; I've already used the
cleaning solution for the printhead and am working on cleaning the rest of
the machine for use as a backup. Boy, were things filthy; I think as a
result of my overfilling the cartridges and/or putting them into the machine
while they may have still been "dripping" after a refill. Won't make that
mistake again!
I'm cleaning anything I can see had ink on it, mostly the foam. Is there an
actual tank that would siphon used or "deep cleaned" ink? If so, I'd like to
locate it and deal with it. Much thanks for any help!
