I had a successful upgrade from XP Pro to Vista, however, I am not satified
with performance. I would like to do a clean install after doing a formating
of my hard drive and make it a true clean install. How is this accomplished
now that I have an upgrade running?

Boot your PC into safe mode with command prompt. Then format c:. Then when
finished, reboot PC with Vista install disk in DVD drive. Be sure that you
have boot from DVD or CD drive enabled in your system setup or BIOS.

I got to the C prompt, entered "format c:", answered the volume name query,
then was notified that volume was being used. When I responded "Y" to
dismount question the system would not allow me to go forward. How do I
dismount volume so I can proceed with format?

Thanks for your promptness.

Boot from the Vista CD. During the install delete then re-create and format
the partition you want to install Vista on.

I attempted to boot from DVD but computer skips right past it. I have changed
boot seq. in BIOS to load ATAPI DVD as 1st...and moved HD0 to the bottom of
the list but this doesn't seem to matter. I have also excluded HD from boot
seq. and get a no O/S error. Could it be VISTA DVD is not bootable? I am
running ThinkPAD T43. Any thoughts about workaround? Really need a true clean
install.

Did you burn the DVD or is it from Microsoft. It sounds like the DVD is not
bootable.

Burned it myself. Is there a way to tell if the DVD is bootable, i.e., are
there obvious files to be scene on the disk...or is everything hidden?

Thus far I have not been able to boot from any other DVD player with my disk
so therein may lie the problem. The DVD was burned with Nero. Is there a step
in Nero that must be carried out to create a bootable DVD, or will just
burning the ISO as a data disk carry with it the bootable files?

You have to burn the image to disc, not burn a data disc. In Nero there is
a burn image option.

I use Nero 6. In Nero Burning ROM close the wizard, click on file - open and
browse to the iso file. Then pick burn and you are done. In Nero Express
pick disc image or saved project.

I did also notice that my burned copy of Vista x86, when booted, wanted to
install on the first disc partition it saw, and gave no option to select
another partition or to create one. But when I installed from XP with the
same disc, it gave me the choice of every partition I have. Curious... I
didn't think too much of it at the time, but the more I canoodle, the more I
think I should send some feedback about it. Thoughts anyone?
