My hd was running windows XP and I am trying to format it (done
several times before but it just won't work now) using a Windows 98
boot disk and trying to format C.
Now it boots from A but then it gives me the error " Invalid drive
specification" when I try to format C.
This has never happened before......
Could someone give me any pointers?
This had never happened before……
Oh.....I am using a win 98 SE boot disk if that makes any difference.

Thanks,

FayeC

I don't understand why you're trying to use a Win98 boot diskette if
your goal is to install WinXP. You're adding an entirely unnecessary
level of complexity to a normally simple operation.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

There has to be a partition on the hard drive before you format.
Win 98 "Fdisk" to create primary partition. Then "Format".
I agree since you goal is Win XP, why not use Win XP CD!!
Win 98 disk would format using FAT file system.
Win XP can format with FAT or NTFS. Should use NTFS.
Win XP CD will create NFTS partition and format drive automatically.
USE Win XP CD!!
